Vestibular Rehabilitation

How Can Vestibular Rehabilitation Help?

There are several causes of dizziness. A physiotherapist with post-graduate training in vestibular rehabilitation can help improve symptoms related to many vestibular (inner ear/balance disorders). Vestibular disorders occur when there is a problem with the parts of the inner ear and brain that register and process the sensory information involved in controlling balance and eye movement. These problems can occur for a variety of reasons. People with vestibular disorders often experience vertigo, dizziness, visual disturbance and/or balance disturbance. Some other symptoms that can be experienced can include nausea and/or vomiting, decreased focus or concentration and fatigue.

Vestibular rehabilitation is intended to reduce or alleviate the symptoms of vestibular disorders. Sometimes the cause of the symptoms can be addressed and at other times the restoration of vestibular function will be small, but function can improve, and symptoms reduce through compensation. Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based intervention, with customized exercises to address the specific problems an individual is experiencing. Treatment can include habituation, visual exercises and balance training. A home exercise program will be an important part of rehabilitation.
